Adrenaline Rush @ IMAX

There are those who take their first roller coaster ride in adolescence and will never get on one again. Then there are those who get right back in line for a second, and third and fourth ride. This IMAX film is about those people. The adrenaline rush of the title is not about bestowing this surge of excitement on the viewer, but about the dynamics of humans, here mostly male, who live for the thrill of a dangerous moment. Containing some essential IMAX large format, bigger than life moments in magnificent shots from the brink of a precipitous cliff, or airborne over the fjords and mountains of Norway, the focus is on the pursuit of that rush of endorphins and man’s fascination with the primal lure of unaided flight.

Starting with a do-not-try-this-at-home disclaimer, the idea revolves around the evolutionarily adaptive stimulation of the brain, involving serotonin and unusually low levels of MAO inhibitors, to explain why some people have a high need for thrill seeking. The flying theories and parachute designs of Leonardo da Vinci frame the narrative about our species unique craving for recreational risk. In an effort to make this resemble a scientific record, one group decides it is high time da Vinci’s design is put to the test and constructs the primitive but sound chute according to the great master’s blueprint. This experiment is augmented by in-air shots of a troupe of jumpers who have perfected their body control to perform extraordinary choreographed flips, dips and somersaults, during free fall. Filmed as they fall, with a camera strapped to one of the skydivers, their feats resemble a sort of Cirque du Soleil at 30,000 feet. They even play a game of catch using a lead ball designed to fall at the same rate. Their rush comes from pulling the cord just in time.

This small but growing group of thrill seekers keeps refining the sport, by inventing new chutes and "wing suits." One record breaking four-plus minutes in the air does approach flight, but the rush of what they may feel like is not visited upon viewer, it simply looks like a long fall from a big sky. As one ace jumper points out, being in a boat is not the same as swimming, and riding in an airplane is not the same as flying.

Adrenaline Rush: The Science Of Risk is a thrilling look at the world of skydiving and base jumping - parachuting from a building, bridge or cliff. With breathtaking views of skydiving over the Florida Keys, the Mojave Desert and the magnificent Fjords of Norway, this giant-screen experience explores the psychological and physiological forces behind risk-taking and the physics involved in high-risk activities.

The film follows two top risk-takers, Adrian Nicholas and Katarina Ollikainen, as they try to fly the first parachute ever designed as imagined in 1485 by Leonardo da Vinci. Adrenaline Rush also allows viewers to experience a base jump. Thanks to a camera strapped to one of the professional jumpers who took part in the film, you can live through a 4,150-foot jump from a legendary Norwegian cliff.

Adrenaline Rush was exhibited in IMAX® and other giant-screen theatres around the world. The video version of the film has been specially mixed and mastered to produce an outstanding DTS Digital Surround and Dolby Digital 5.1 home theatre experience.

Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk
ADRENALINE RUSH explores the innards of risk taking in a wide and spectacular way. From the "explosive" science and entrepreneurship of Alfred Nobel to a schoolboy’s first day in class, from the boldness and determination of Henry Ford to the shy but affectionate sentiment of a teen for another, ADRENALINE RUSH brings us on a journey in the multidimensional world of risk, a world where progress of humankind or personal accomplishment aren’t necessarily related to the scope or the nature of the endeavor.

ADRENALINE RUSH also teaches us that humanity can benefit from the unexpected and combined efforts of two very different risk takers whose minds meet across half a millennium and across the boundaries of the Old and New Worlds, as we witness the experiment of Leonardo Da Vinci’s notorious parachute by Adrian Nicholas, world’s most respected skydiver and inventor in his own right, monitored closely by Salford scientists who seek answers on critical and life pertaining matters. Incidentally, ADRENALINE RUSH doesn’t hesitate to explain scientific concepts in simple words.

From the soaring and breathtaking cliffs of Norway to the calm and inspiring immensity of the Mojave Desert, from Thomas Edison’s laboratory to a simple American schoolyard, ADRENALINE RUSH is more than a thrilling visual experience, it’s an invitation to explore our inner selves and a statement that there is no such thing as having little courage.

This IMAX short film tells the story of following the Blue Nile from Ethiopia to Egypt. It is also the story of past civilizations and how they prospered or suffered because of nature and their own short-sightedness or desperation. Along the way the members of the expedition see kindness and joy in places of conflict like The Sudan. Fear , danger and menace are everywhere from crocodiles to murderous bandits. The team consisting of several men and two women are geologists, archaeologists, reporters and adventurers. A cancer survivor and a "city guy" are part of the group. They face grueling challenges and flirt with danger, disease and death. Through it all they maintain a positive attitude and a real empathy for the people of the Nile and the past civilizations that both cared for and exploited the resources of this river. This is a fantastic, exciting and visually stunning film. It is full of hope and foreboding. It is amazing and inspiring.

A breathtaking cinematic adventure that takes you on an expedition down the world’s greatest and most deadly river, the Blue Nile. For 114 days, a team of explorers led by Pasquale Scaturro and Gordon Brown face seemingly insurmountable challenges as they make their way along all 3,260 miles of the river to become the first in history to complete a full descent of the Blue Nile from source to sea.

The story of this Great Adventure Film® is the subject of a new large format film, MYSTERY OF THE NILE, from Spanish production company Orbita Max and Academy Award®-nominated filmmakers MacGillivray Freeman Films, premiering in select IMAX® theatres and other giant screen cinemas in February 2005.
